Larch (Larix Gmelinii) Specs

Origin

(Larix Gmelinii) grows in eastern Siberia, northeastern Mongolia and northeastern China. It thrives in cold, continental climates with harsh winters and short summers, often in taiga forests, tolerating poor soils and permafrost.

Properties

It has a density of 590–750 kg/m³, high bending strength (~90–100 MPa). Naturally resistant to decay and insects (EN 350 Class 3–4), it weathers to a silver-gray if left untreated and resists moisture uptake. Thermal conductivity is ~0.13–0.15 W/m·K, and it offers decent acoustic absorption.

Usage

Common uses include exterior cladding, decking, window frames, structural beams, fencing, and flooring. Key advantages are durability without treatment, attractive color, stability when dried, and sustainable supply. Drawbacks include potential surface checking, resin bleed, harder machining than pine/spruce, and occasional twisting if improperly dried or stored.

Endurance

Larix Gmelinii is one of the most durable softwoods for exterior use, valued for its density, resin content, and natural decay resistance.

Lifespan: 30–50 years untreated; 50+ years with maintenance.

Weathers to silver-gray in 1–3 years if left untreated, without loss of strength.

Comparison: Outperforms many softwoods in stability and hardness.
